Section8Housing.us helps people find the public housing agency that serves their area and understand how the Housing Choice Voucher programme — commonly called Section 8 — actually works: who administers it, how applications are made, and what a waiting list means.
What this site is not
This is an independently operated information site. To be completely clear about what that means:
- We are not HUD — the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development — and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of HUD.
- We are not a government agency of any kind, federal, state or local.
- We do not issue housing vouchers, and we cannot get anyone a voucher.
- We do not accept Section 8 applications. No form on this site is an application for housing assistance.
- We do not decide eligibility and we do not control, operate or have visibility into any waiting list.
Eligibility, waiting lists, and every decision about assistance are handled by your local public housing agency (PHA) under HUD's rules. Applications must be made directly to a PHA — never through this site, and never through anyone charging a fee to submit one on your behalf.
Where our information comes from
Our directory of public housing agencies originates from a published HUD contact dataset. Agency contact details change over time, and parts of our listing are out of date — we are working through that. Always confirm details with the agency itself, or with HUD, before relying on them. If you find something wrong, please tell us.
Our guidance articles describe the programme in general terms. Rules vary by agency, by locality and by programme, so treat them as background and confirm specifics with the agency that serves you.
Watch out for scams
Nobody can sell you a voucher, move you up a waiting list, or guarantee you assistance. Applying to a PHA is free. Be cautious of anyone who charges a fee to apply on your behalf, asks for payment to "secure" a voucher, or requests your Social Security number or bank details through an unofficial channel.
